Inland Hospital and four other EMHS members have earned recognition for exceptional performance in 2013 from Avatar Solutions, a national organization that measures and compares hospital safety and patient satisfaction based on patient, employee, and physician surveys. Inland Hospital Earns “A” Grade Again in National Patient Safety Program

Waterville, Maine, April 29, 2014 – Inland Hospital in Waterville has once again earned a top grade in patient safety by an independent national non-profit run by employers and large purchasers of health benefits. The latest update to the Hospital Safety Score, released by The Leapfrog Group, shows Inland receiving an “A” ranking in the industry watchdog’s Spring 2014 assessment of U.S. hospitals when it comes preventing medical errors, injuries, accidents, and infections.

Inland Named as a Top Rural Hospital

For the third time in four years, The Leapfrog Group has named Inland Hospital in Waterville to its annual list of Top Rural Hospitals in the U.S. Three other EMHS hospitals (Blue Hill Memorial, Charles A. Dean Memorial in Greenville and SVH in Pittsfield) were also named to the list that recognizes hospitals for their outstanding safety and quality.

Inland was selected as a Top Hospital out of a record number of 1,324 hospitals participating in The Leapfrog Group’s annual survey. The list includes 22 Top Rural Hospitals (nine in Maine), 55 Top Urban Hospitals and 13 Top Children’s Hospitals. Hospitals reaching this achievement include academic medical centers, teaching hospitals, children’s hospitals, and community hospitals in rural, suburban and urban settings. The selection is based on the results of the Leapfrog Group’s annual hospital survey, which measures hospitals’ performance on patient safety and quality, focusing on three critical areas of hospital care: how patients fare, resource use, and management structures in place to prevent errors. The results of the survey are posted on the Leapfrog website ( and are available for patients and families, the public, employers and other purchasers of health care.

Inland Among Best Hospitals for Women

Inland Hospital has received the 2014 Women’s Choice Award® ranking among America’s Best Hospitals for Patient Experience in Obstetrics. This marks the second consecutive year of earning this award. The distinction is the only award that identifies the country’s best healthcare institutions based on robust criteria that consider female patient satisfaction, clinical excellence, and what women say they want from a hospital, including quality physician communications, responsiveness of nurses and support staff, cleanliness and trusted referrals from other women.

Inland Awarded “A” Grade by Hospital

Inland Hospital was honored with an “A” grade in the Fall 2013 update to the Hospital Safety Score, which rates how well hospitals protect patients from accidents, errors, injuries and infections. The Hospital Safety Score is compiled under the guidance of the nation’s leading experts on patient safety and is administered by The Leapfrog Group (Leapfrog), an independent industry watchdog. The first and only hospital safety rating to be analyzed in the peer-reviewed Journal of Patient Safety, the Score is designed to give the public information they can use to protect themselves and their families.

Inland Among “Most Wired” Hospitals

Inland and five other EMHS hospitals are at the forefront of using information technology to improve patient care, based on the results of a 2013 survey published by the American Hospital Association. Eastern Maine Medical Center, Sebasticook Valley Hospital, and Blue Hill Memorial Hospital were recognized in the healthcare’s most wired category, and TAMC, Acadia Hospital, and Inland Hospital were honored in the most wired – small and rural category. The six hospitals were among only eight in Maine to be recognized.

Inland Earns “A” for Safety

Inland Hospital in Waterville has been recognized with an “A” Hospital Safety Score by The Leapfrog Group, an independent national nonprofit run by employers and other large purchasers of health benefits. The A score was awarded in the latest update to the Hospital Safety ScoreSM, the A, B, C, D or F scores assigned to U.S. hospitals based on preventable medical errors, injuries accidents, and infections.

EMHS Vision Success

The Results are In! Success in Journey to be the Best Rural Healthcare System in America

It was in 2007 that EMHS set forth to achieve its vision - to be the best rural healthcare system in America by (September 30) 2012. A process was established to measure success, and systemwide goals were set around many initiatives, including employee retention, well workplace programs, improving patient satisfaction, physician practice quality, and chronic disease care management. While we know we still have much work to do, we’re proud to say that we’ve realized incredible success through this work, with many of our goals being achieved or surpassed…

Heart First Receives Quality Recognition

Heart First Cardiology Associates has been awarded the Bridges to Excellence® Cardiology Practice Recognition for meeting rigorous thresholds established by the American College of Cardiology and Bridges to Excellence®. Heart First, a department of Inland Hospital, is the first cardiology practice in Maine and one of only 15 practices nationwide to receive the prestigious award.

For the fifth year in a row, Inland Hospital has received top honors for patient satisfaction by an international survey company. Avatar International awarded Inland with “Exceeding Patient Expectations” on June 29.
