The History of Inland Hospital and Philanthropy

Founded on the osteopathic philosophy of treating the whole person
The planning for Inland Hospital began on May 8, 1943 in the living room of two doctors who wanted to offer the community a different choice in hospital care.

Drs. William and Nora Brown invited fourteen physicians into their home to discuss the future of medical care in the Waterville area. The group was excited to establish a new hospital and each physician committed $600 (equal to $7500 today) toward the new facility, which was originally named the Waterville Osteopathic Hospital. These donations helped purchase the original Western Avenue building.

The kind and giving spirit of the physicians was shared by others and soon an Auxiliary Group was formed. From fund raising to sewing new bandages and blankets, Auxiliary members graciously donated their time and talents to help the hospital’s operations and growth.

Before long, the community’s growing healthcare needs required more space. Land on Kennedy Memorial Drive was purchased from Sadie Baldic and plans for a brand new, larger hospital were underway. A $300,000 fund raising effort began in 1960 and was the first ever appeal to the community. The list of charitable donors is seen to the right. Two years later the new hospital was completed at its present location.

The hospital continued to grow and in 1970, the Dean Wing was added, thanks to the generosity of the Charles A. Dean Trust and the hard work of the Inland Hospital Board of Trustees. In 1986, the hospital purchased Lakewood, a continuing care center, enhancing the community’s continuum of care.

In the mid-1990’s, the Waterville Osteopathic Hospital was renamed Inland Hospital and became part of Eastern Maine Healthcare Systems (EMHS). In 2000, Inland completed the Medical Arts Building adjacent to the hospital to help make quality healthcare more convenient for patients and physicians.

Inland’s unwavering mission over the years has been to care for and serve the people of our community. Whether it’s new facilities, growing the medical staff, or adding new healthcare services, Inland is dedicated to providing the best quality, safety, and service for patients and their families. Through the leadership of the Browns - who had a healthcare vision for Waterville - and the countless people who supported the vision with donations, volunteer support and more, Inland is a strong community asset and remains a hospital where patients always come first!
