Are any of the following statements true about you?
Sleep Apnea
I've been told that I snore.
I've been told that I stop breathing when I sleep, although I may not remember this when I wake up.
I feel sleepy during the day even though I slept through the night.
I've been told that I have high blood pressure.
I've been told that I am a restless sleeper - that I toss and turn a lot.
I sweat excessively during the night.
I frequently awaken with headaches.
I am overweight and/or am gaining weight.
I seem to be losing my sex drive.
If you marked three or more of the statements above, you show symptoms of sleep apnea, a disorder which causes you to stop breathing during sleep.
Nocturnal Myoclonus, or Restless Leg Syndrome
I experience muscle tension in my legs even when I am otherwise relaxed.
I have noticed, or others have commented, that parts of my body jerk during sleep.
I have been told that I kick at night.
I experience aching or "crawling" sensations in my legs.
I experience leg pain during the night.
Sometimes I can't keep my legs still at night. I just have to move them.
Even though I sleep through the night I feel sleepy during the day.
If you marked two or more of the statements above, you show symptoms of Nocturnal Myoclonus, or Restless Leg Syndrome. This disorder is characterized by repeated jerking during sleep, or by pain or "crawling" sensations in the legs.
Narcolepsy
I had trouble concentrating when I was in school.
When I am angry or surprised or I laugh, I feel like I'm going limp.
I have fallen asleep while driving.
I feel like I go around in a daze.
I have experienced vivid dreamlike scenes upon falling asleep or awakening.
I have fallen asleep while laughing or crying.
I have trouble at work or school because of sleepiness.
Sometimes no matter how hard I try to stay awake, I fall asleep anyway.
Sometimes I feel unable to move when I'm waking up or falling asleep.
If you marked three or more of the statements above, you show symptoms of narcolepsy, a lifelong disorder characterized by uncontrollable attacks of sleepiness during the day.
If your self-test scores indicate that you may have a sleeping disorder, you should talk with your doctor about your concerns, or contact the Sleep Center of Maine at Inland Hospital at 207-861-3230.
